Songs from Jane Austen’s Parlor

  • Rose City Book Pub 1329 Northeast Fremont Street Portland, OR, 97212 United States (map)

A program of songs from Jane Austen’s own personal music library, as well as music beloved in the social music-making of her time, performed by Emma Cowell and Jocelyn Claire Thomas. Their charming, accessible program includes music by familiar composers like Beethoven and Haydn, as well as folk songs, humorous Regency parlor music, and recently-discovered historical gems. The program caught the attention of The Oregonian, who wrote about it in this news article.

In theirperformances, Jocelyn and Emma recreate the experience of Regency home music-making, taking turns singing to each other’s piano accompaniment, as well as singing duets together. As a music historian, Emma shares stories about the literary and historical context of our music, and Jocelyn adds her lovely flute playing to several numbers. They perform in authentic Regency dress to transport audiences to the sitting rooms of Jane Austen’s time.
